The surveillance economy spent twenty years measuring your attention and selling it back to advertisers. The Patina measures your attention and reflects it back to you — inside the file, with nobody else in the room.
There is a difference between a tool that shows its use and a tool that tracks you. The first is a leather satchel with a soft corner where your hand goes. The second is a dashboard that ships your behaviour to a server so somebody can decide what to sell you next. Our Swiss Knife is the first kind, on purpose.
Where the data lives
Inside the file. That's the whole story. The Knife counts its own use in your browser, writes the wear back into the same HTML file it opened from, and never contacts anyone. There is no analytics endpoint, no telemetry pipeline, no “anonymised” usage report. There is nowhere for the numbers to go.
What it looks like
Five wear bands per blade, from pristine to veteran, painted into the interface as small differential marks — a slightly soft edge, a warmer tone, a page corner beginning to curl. The Garden takes the same idea and applies it to living entries: contacts, plants, hives, pets bloom when tended and wilt at the corner when neglected. Nothing scolds. Nothing deletes.
Why it's not a metric
Because a veteran blade isn't better than a pristine one; it's just used. Because a wilting entry isn't a failure; it's a fact. Metrics compare you to a target. The Patina just tells you the truth about what has actually been part of your life this year. If you'd rather not see it, quiet steel turns the flourishes off in a single click.
The contrast with cloud tools
Cloud productivity tools remember everything — and so does the company that runs them, and their subprocessors, and the ad networks they hand data to. When the company pivots or shuts down, your record goes with them. Our Knife remembers everything — and only you have it. When we pivot or shut down, your file still opens.

Common questions
Is the Patina a form of tracking?
No. Tracking requires someone else to receive the data. The Patina writes wear back into your own file, in your own browser, and nobody else sees it. If you delete the file, the record goes with it.
Can I export the wear data?
The wear is part of the file itself — you already have it. Every tracker also offers a CSV export of its entries, so you can leave with everything at any time.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. The Knife is a web page; it opens in your phone's browser and the Patina renders the same way. The Forge assembly experience is designed desktop-first, but the Knife itself is portable.
What happens if I share my file with someone?
They see the patina you've put on it — the wear is a record of that file. If they use it, they add their own wear on top. If you want a clean copy, reforge from scratch.
Do you have a dashboard I can log into?
No. There is no account, no server, no dashboard. The only dashboard is the one inside your Knife — a cross-tool view called the Dashboard, which reads your own file and shows you patterns across blades.
