The Patina is the mechanic inside every Swiss Knife that lets the file record its own use — quietly, locally, and forever. No dashboard, no leaderboard, no telemetry sent anywhere. Just an object that begins to look like yours, because it is.
What ‘ages’ actually means here
Five wear bands, from pristine to veteran. Each blade in your Knife tracks its own wear, calculated from real interaction — opens, edits, entries added. The Ledger you reach for every week acquires a patina in months; the Wine Cellar you never open stays as bright as the day the Forge cut it. It's differential, per-blade, and completely local.
It survives every reforge
Bring the file back to the Forge, add a blade, remove one, jump tiers — the years travel with the entries. The Patina isn't a log kept somewhere else. It's part of the object. That is only possible because there is no server: your file is the single source of truth, and the wear is written into it.
It's local, forever
Nothing about your usage leaves your browser. There is no analytics endpoint to send it to. The knife counts its own reaching hand, in your machine, and paints itself accordingly. Close the tab and reopen it in ten years — the patina is right where you left it, because it is the file.
The opposite of a metric
A veteran blade isn't “better” than a pristine one — it's used. A wilting entry isn't a failure — it's a fact. The Knife is telling you the truth, not grading you. Mute the flourishes entirely with quiet steel if you'd rather.

Common questions
Does the Patina track my behaviour somewhere?
No. There is no server. The Knife counts its own use, locally, inside the file. Nothing is sent anywhere because there is nowhere to send it to.
Can I turn it off?
Yes. Every Knife has a quiet steel toggle that mutes the visual patina and the Garden wilting. The wear data is still there — just hidden — so you can turn it back on later.
What happens to the patina when I reforge?
It travels with the entries. Add a blade, remove one, jump tiers — the wear on every kept blade is preserved. That's only possible because the Knife is a file, not an account.
Is this a productivity score?
No. There is no leaderboard, no streak-shaming, no push notification. A veteran blade isn't better than a pristine one; a wilting entry isn't a failure. The Knife reflects what has happened; it doesn't judge it.
Has anyone else sold software that ages?
As far as we can tell, no. Physical tools have carried patinas for centuries; software has always tried to look new. This is our attempt to give a digital tool the same dignity.
