What is Equal Pay Day?

Equal Pay Day expresses a gender pay gap as a date. Counting from 1 January, it marks the point in the year up to which the average gap between women's and men's earnings accounts for. A larger gap lands the date later in the year.

How is the date calculated?

The gender pay gap, as a percentage, is multiplied by 365 days and counted forward from 1 January. A 12% gap is about 44 days, placing Equal Pay Day in mid-February. This is the method used by Equal Pay Day campaigns across Europe.

Where does the data come from?

European figures are Eurostat's unadjusted gender pay gap for 2023 (dataset sdg_05_20, mean hourly earnings), covering the EU27 plus Iceland, Norway and Switzerland. Figures for the Americas and Asia-Pacific are the OECD's gender wage gap for 2022 (median earnings of full-time employees). The United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand use their latest national statistics (ONS, ABS and Stats NZ respectively), each measured its own way and labelled in full. The sources use different methods and are kept separate, never blended. You can also enter your own figure.
