In which the careful Reader may trace
the ascent of the Engine from its first appearance
                    unto the present considerably-improved state.

A NOTE TO THE READER.

The present sheet is appended to every fresh impression of the
Apparatus, & records — in reverse chronological order, after the
modern fashion — the various improvements, corrections, &
emendations which have been worked into the Engine since its first
appearance in the Spring of M·CM·X.

The Operator long-acquainted with the Apparatus may consult this
list to see what has changed; the new Operator may consult it to
see how far we have come, & in particular to admire the diligent
& unceasing labour of our compositors.

Each Impression is dated according to the day of its first
delivery from our presses. The Operator desirous of the very
latest Impression should apply to the Proprietor — OFFLINE LTD. —
or to any of our authorised agents in the principal cities of the
  Empire.

═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
✦ THE FIFTH IMPRESSION ✦ (the present)
Trinity Term, M·CM·XI · in May
═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════

THIS IMPRESSION introduces a Compleat Manual upon the noble Art of
HyperText, in 138 pages, & three vivid period specimens by way of
example. We submit it for the Operator's pleasure & instruction.

  ── NEW ADDITIONS ──

✦ A COMPLEAT MANUAL upon the noble Art of HYPER-TEXT, by
Professor Q. Eldritch Horncastle of Cambridge, in 138 pages,
set in five distinct typefaces (Cormorant Garamond, IM Fell
English, IM Fell English Small Caps, Special Elite, & Caveat),
provided as a separate volume of considerable beauty.

✦ THREE SAMPLE STATE-FILES, bearing genuine specimens of period
composition that the Operator may load directly into the
         Apparatus: —

              i. Cumberland's Patent Electro-Pneumatic Toast-Raiser
                 (a Provisional Specification of March 1908);

ii. A Letter Concerning the Comet, with sundry domestic
                 news (Bayswater to Wiltshire, May 1910);

iii. The Travel-Journal of Miss Constance Lavery, kept
aboard the maiden voyage of R.M.S. Mauretania
                 (November 1907).

✦ This very sheet of Errata & Particulars, which the Operator
         is at this moment perusing.

✦ A formal COMMERCIAL DEED OF LICENCE, in the proper period
legal form, with nine Articles & a closing seal.

✦ Particulars for the new Operator (the README), in the form of
         a printer's instruction-sheet.

═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
✦ THE FOURTH IMPRESSION ✦
Hilary Term, M·CM·XI · in February
═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════

  ── NEW ADDITIONS ──

✦ A revised stamp upon the principal action ("STRIKE A FINISHED
IMPRESSION TO DISK"), now appearing in a tasteful taupe, with
         a hover-state in a warmer reddish-taupe of considerable
         agreeableness.

✦ Tooltips bearing chevrons upon their lower edge, after the
manner of the better Continental publications.

✦ Padded ornaments around the keyboard short-cuts displayed in
         the said tooltips: (⌘ S) & (⌘ R).

✦ An apple-with-bite scribble in the lower-left corner of the
Apparatus, lending the proceedings a touch of orchard cheer.

✦ An Art Deco SUNBURST ICON presiding over the empty Lens,
together with the legend "THE LENS AWAITS" by way of
         encouragement.

✦ Corner-wear at the upper-left of the Apparatus (at 0.7
opacity), lending the appearance of an Engine already loved.

  ── CORRECTIONS & EMENDATIONS ──

✦ The fields of input now display in our proper blue ink
(#142a52), rather than the previous indistinct hue.

✦ The autofill behaviour, which formerly displayed the
Operator's previous compositions in disagreeable pastels
contributed by his Browser, is now overridden by means of
a generous box-shadow trick (1000px inset). The matter is
delicate, but the result is dignified.

✦ The placeholder of the Salutations & Felicitations editor
now reads "Salutations & Felicitations", which we judge
considerably more agreeable than the previous "Description".

✦ The previous corner-fold ornament has been removed in
favour of the corner-wear, which we find more dignified
         & less suggestive of carelessness.

═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
✦ THE THIRD IMPRESSION ✦
Michaelmas Term, M·CM·X · in November
═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════

  ── NEW ADDITIONS ──

      ✦ Borders upon the Apparatus's input-fields, in a more
subdued grey (#756c5e), in place of the previous too-
         emphatic dark.

✦ The Apparatus title-field now displays in our characteristic
blue ink (#142a52), for greater dignity & for ease of
distinction from the body of the composition.

✦ Parchment-tone backgrounds upon all input fields, in the
range from #ecdfc0 to #e6d6b3, that the Operator may feel
himself to be writing upon proper paper rather than upon
the chill glass of an unsympathetic apparatus.

  ── CORRECTIONS & EMENDATIONS ──

✦ Several solecisms in the live preview, by which certain
valid HyperText elements were rendered incorrectly, have
         been remedied.

✦ A leak in the IndexedDB writer, by which the Apparatus
occasionally consigned the Operator's labours to the void,
         has been firmly stopped up.

═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
✦ THE SECOND IMPRESSION ✦
Long Vacation, M·CM·X · in August
═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════

  ── NEW ADDITIONS ──

✦ The "EMPTY THE PRESS" button, by which the Apparatus may
be wholly purged of the Operator's previous composition,
with appropriate prompting before so drastic an action.

✦ The PERSISTENCE feature, by which the Operator's labours
are retained between sessions in the Browser's private
store, that he may close the Engine without fear of loss.

      ✦ Keyboard short-cuts (⌘ S) & (⌘ R), now functional &
         reliably so.

  ── CORRECTIONS & EMENDATIONS ──

✦ Several perplexing typographical defects in the live Lens,
by which characters of foreign extraction were rendered as
small rectangular boxes, are now repaired.

✦ An issue by which the file-export occasionally produced
documents containing only the doctype & no body, has been
identified, traced to a single misplaced semicolon, &
         corrected.

✦ The disagreeable behaviour of the Apparatus upon Engines
of narrow screen has been ameliorated. The Apparatus shall
not yet present itself perfectly upon a pocket-engine, but
it no longer offends the eye.

═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
✦ THE FIRST IMPRESSION ✦
Easter Term, M·CM·X · in April
═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════

Issued in modest numbers, principally for the gratification of our
patient subscribers & for the demonstration of the Engine to His
Majesty's patent examiner upon the occasion of his enquiry.

Contained the principal Apparatus in working condition, but lacked
many of the refinements which subsequent Impressions have introduced.

── PRINCIPAL FEATURES OF THIS IMPRESSION ──

      ✦  The Editor & Lens, in their original two-column arrangement;

✦ The principal action ("Strike Impression"), then merely a
         plain button & not yet bearing the present taupe livery;

✦ The Title of Apparatus & Description (so termed in this
         Impression) fields;

      ✦  Single-file delivery, & wholly self-contained operation;

      ✦ No Inter-net connection required.

This First Impression is now a collector's piece, & the Proprietor
shall be pleased to repurchase any extant copy at the original
list price (twelve guineas), for the company archive.

═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════

                       A WORD UPON FORTHCOMING WORK.

The Proprietor's compositors are presently engaged upon a SIXTH
IMPRESSION, in which we hope to introduce: an animated transition
between the Editor & the Lens; a system of named drafts (after the
manner of an architect's portfolio); & a properly-fitted display for
pocket-engines. The Operator may expect this in the autumn, providing
the present author's gout, the postal service, & the Cambridge term-
schedule do not all conspire against him at once.
