Not a metaphor — a mechanic. Every Swiss Knife the Forge builds now wears with actual use, and the wear lives inside the file forever.* A knife you use begins to show it. The blades you reach for wear soft at the edge; the ones you never touch stay factory-bright. Enter a contact and forget them for a season and their card wilts a little at the corner; tend it and it blooms back. This is not a graphic layered on top; it is the file remembering what has actually happened to it. We call it the Patina, and as far as we can tell, nobody has sold software that ages before. ## How it works Every blade in your Knife carries five wear bands, from **pristine** to **veteran**. The wear is **per-blade** — differential — calculated from real interaction inside the file. Reach for the Ledger every Tuesday for a year and it acquires a patina; ignore the Wine Cellar and it stays as bright as the day the Forge cut it. The calculation is local. There is no telemetry, no usage log sent anywhere, no analytics pixel. The file counts its own reaching hand, in your browser, and paints itself accordingly. Close the tab and reopen it in five years and the patina is right where you left it, because it is the file. ## What survives a reforge Bring your Knife back to the Forge, add a Blade, remove one, resize the whole thing — the years travel with the entries. The patina is not a log kept somewhere else; it is part of the object. Every knife your household has ever forged is quietly telling you which parts of your life you have actually lived in and which you have only meant to. Contacts, plants, hives, pets, the sourdough starter you named Colin — the Knife treats them as living. Tend them and they bloom; neglect them and they wilt, quietly, at the corner. Nothing is deleted. Nothing scolds you. The file simply shows you what you have and have not attended to. ## Why this matters Every other piece of software you use tries to look eternally new. The buttons refresh, the layout redesigns, the version number ticks up, and none of it has any bearing on whether the thing has been part of your life or not. It's software as showroom floor. A patina is the opposite of a showroom floor. It is the mark of an object that has been **used** — a leather satchel, a wooden spoon, a well-carried pocketknife. It tells you, without a dashboard or a chart, that this thing is yours. We think a personal tool should feel that way. We think the surveillance economy has spent twenty years measuring your attention and selling it back to advertisers, and the least a piece of honest software can do is measure your attention and reflect it back to *you*, in the object itself, with nobody else in the room. ## Anti-metric, by design The Patina is not a productivity score. There is no leaderboard, no streak-shaming, no "you missed a day" push notification (there is nothing to push from, and nowhere to push to). A blade that has grown veteran is not "better" than a pristine one — it is *used*. A wilting entry is not a failure — it is a fact. The Knife is telling you the truth, not grading you.
