## What is Offline.Ltd?

Offline.Ltd builds offline-first, privacy-centric HTML tools for professionals. Every product is a single HTML file. You buy it once, download it, and own it forever. There are no subscriptions, no accounts, no tracking, no cloud dependencies, and no telemetry.

**Tagline:** Sovereignty as a Service.

**Core promise:** Your data. Not their business. Tools. Just tools.

Offline.Ltd is built and maintained by Twan and Petur, based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

## Philosophy

### The Quiet Room

You know that hum? Not the fan in your laptop, but that low-frequency vibration that seems to run through the entire internet now. The feeling that even when you are typing in a blank document, someone is looking over your shoulder. The login screens. The "accept cookies" pop-ups. The specialized software that stops working the moment your credit card expires, turning your own data into a hostage.

We stopped buying tools somewhere along the way and started renting permission to work. We traded ownership for convenience, but the convenience has curdled into a monthly subscription for the right to breathe.

Offline.Ltd is a small counter-weight. It's the heavy click of a deadbolt sliding shut. Now, doesn't that make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside?

### Sovereignty as a Service

The philosophy here is simple, almost archaic: If you pay for a tool, you should own it. Not a license to access it for thirty days, but the thing itself. The code. The file. The function. Insultingly simple.

We build single-file HTML applications. You download them. You use them. Or you don't. See if we care. The fact is: we don't know, either way.

There is no server farm in Virginia processing your keystrokes. There is no telemetry beam shooting back to headquarters to tell us how long you spent on the "About" page. When you buy a hammer from a hardware store, the cashier doesn't ask for your email address so the hammer can update its privacy policy next Tuesday. It drives nails.

We believe software should feel like that hammer. Or better yet, like a knife. Cold, weighted, and utterly indifferent to whether you have a wifi connection or what's your mother's maiden name.

### The Digital Heirloom

There is a paradox here. We are using modern tech — AI, semantic search, dynamic DOM manipulation — to return to a pre-internet way of being.

We want you to have software you could put on a USB drive, lock in a safe for ten years, and know it will still run when you plug it back in. No "server not found." No "subscription lapsed." Just the tool, exactly as you left it, ready to work.

There is a specific kind of silence that comes when you pull the ethernet cable and realize your machine is still powerful, still capable, and finally, completely yours. Who knew.

That's the signal we are trying to find.

### Four Principles

1. **Offline First** — Every tool works without an internet connection. Download it once, use it forever. No servers to go down, no services to discontinue.

2. **Single File** — Each product is a single HTML file. No installation, no dependencies, no build steps. Double-click to open. That's it.

3. **Privacy by Architecture** — Your data never leaves your machine unless you explicitly send it to an LLM API. No analytics, no telemetry, no tracking. We can't see your data because we never had access to it.

4. **Own It Forever** — One purchase. No subscription. No recurring fees. The file is yours. Copy it, back it up, email it to yourself. It will work on any computer, in any browser, for as long as browsers exist.

### Pro Tip

Email the HTML file to yourself with a specific subject line. It will always be waiting for you on any computer in the world. Open it, work in it, export your state as JSON, email that back to yourself. Your portable laboratory, everywhere.

---

## How It Works

### General Workflow

1. **Purchase** a product from the Offline.Ltd website (one-time payment via LemonSqueezy).
2. **Download** the HTML file.
3. **Open** it in any modern browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge).
4. **Use** it. Your data stays in your browser's local storage.
5. **Export** your state as JSON at any time for backup or transfer.
6. **Import** your state on any other computer by opening the same file and loading the JSON.

### AI-Powered Tools (The General Research Lab & Engines)

Some tools connect to Large Language Models (LLMs) for AI-powered features like Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), summarisation, and analysis. These connections work in two ways:

- **Local AI via Ollama** — Install Ollama on your computer and run models locally. Your documents never leave your machine. This is the recommended privacy-first approach.
- **Cloud AI APIs** — You can optionally connect to OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, or other API providers using your own API key. In this case, data is sent to their servers according to their privacy policies. You control when and if this happens.

The tools themselves never phone home to Offline.Ltd. We have no servers, no analytics, and no way to see what you're doing.

### State Management

All tools use browser localStorage for persistence. You can:
- **Export state** as a JSON file (backup)
- **Import state** from a JSON file (restore or transfer)
- **Clear state** to start fresh
- State persists across browser sessions automatically

### THE GENERAL RESEARCH LAB — $49

*Your complete offline research studio in one file*

**Field:** Any Research | **Type:** Lab

Local RAG engine with 30+ integrated research tools. Index your documents, chat with citations, build timelines, track entities, test hypotheses — all in a single HTML file that never phones home.

The General Research Lab is a self-contained, browser-based research environment delivered as a single HTML file. It requires no installation, no server setup, and no technical expertise. Open it in any modern browser, point it at a folder of documents, and you have an integrated research laboratory. It uses Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) — when you ask the AI a question, it searches through your documents, retrieves the most relevant passages, and uses them as grounding material. Your documents never leave your computer. The AI runs locally via Ollama, so nothing is sent to any external server.

**Tools included (30):**

- **Full Local RAG** — Retrieval-Augmented Generation — ask questions and get answers grounded in your actual documents, not generalities.
- **Smart Summarizer** — Generate structured summaries in multiple formats — brief abstracts, executive summaries, bullet-point key facts, or structured outlines.
- **Multi-Document Comparator** — Side-by-side comparison of two documents or passages with differences highlighted. Identify where accounts agree, diverge, and what those divergences mean.
- **Key Insight Extractor** — Pull structured data from unstructured documents — names, dates, financial figures, legal citations. A folder of contracts becomes a table of parties, dates, terms, and values.
- **Notes** — Rich note-taking integrated into the research workspace. Notes persist across sessions, travel with your state export, and are accessible to the AI.
- **Timeline** — Structured chronological tool for ordering events with dates, descriptions, and source references. Build multiple timelines, mark events as confirmed or disputed.
- **Entities** — Track people, organizations, locations, objects, and concepts. Create entity records with attributes, link entities, and record which documents each entity appears in.
- **Hypotheses** — Formally state, track, and evaluate research hypotheses. Assign statuses — proposed, supported, challenged, or refuted — and record evidence for and against.
- **Document Viewer & Annotations** — Read documents and add structured annotations attached to specific passages — mark as key evidence, contradictions, needs verification, or supports hypothesis.
- **Full-Text Search** — Boolean, phrase, and proximity search across all documents. Save searches for reuse and compare results across queries to find patterns.
- **Cross-Reference Tool** — Find connections between documents — shared references, common entities, related claims, or thematic overlaps. The AI identifies conceptual connections, not just lexical ones.
- **Fact-Checker** — Assess the verifiability of specific claims against your document corpus. Delivers evidence-based verdicts: supported, contradicted, unverifiable, or nuanced.
- **Mindmap / Concept Map** — Visual representation of ideas, entities, and relationships. Create nodes and connect them with labeled edges to reveal structure that linear notes cannot capture.
- **Task Tracker** — Manage research tasks, open questions, and action items with priorities and deadlines. Link tasks to specific documents, entities, or hypotheses.
- **Citation Manager** — Track sources and generate citations in APA, MLA, Chicago, Bluebook, or custom format. Every annotation and note can link to specific citations.
- **Glossary Builder** — Build a research-specific glossary of terms, abbreviations, technical language, and jargon. Searchable and linked to the documents where terms appear.
- **Corpus Analytics** — Understand your document corpus — number of documents, word counts, types, date distribution, and size distribution. Structural features can themselves be evidence.
- **Template Manager** — Create and save templates for recurring research structures — interview summaries, entity profiles, document summaries, hypothesis statements.
- **Export Tools** — Export research outputs as PDF, Word, plain text, CSV, or JSON. The AI can transform your structured data into polished, audience-appropriate prose.
- **Bookmarks & Highlights** — Flag specific passages or documents as significant. Organize bookmarks into collections — Key Evidence, Contradictions, Follow Up, Quotes for Report.
- **Document Relationship Mapper** — Explicitly map relationships between documents: citations, contradictions, revisions, responses. Make the web of documentary relationships visible.
- **Collaborative Notes** — Mark research artifacts with comments intended for collaborators. These travel with the state export, enabling asynchronous collaboration via state file exchange.
- **AI Prompt Library** — Save, organize, and reuse effective prompts for the AI assistant. Organize by category and share across collaborators via state exchange.
- **Evidence Strength Assessor** — Rate evidence on source reliability, corroboration, recency, directness, and potential bias. Identify which hypotheses rest on strong or weak foundations.
- **Language & Sentiment Analyzer** — Analyze tone, sentiment, register, and rhetorical patterns. Shifts in tone, unusual register, or hedged language can be significant research findings.
- **Redaction Manager** — Track redacted material, note what redactions might conceal based on surrounding context, and flag significant redactions. A redaction is information in itself.
- **Statistical Analysis** — Aggregate numerical data, calculate trends and anomalies, and display results in charts and tables. The AI can interpret statistical patterns, not just calculate them.
- **Research Journal** — Automatically records your research activities and allows reflective journal entries. The audit trail is both a record and a thinking tool.
- **Knowledge Gap Identifier** — Systematically surface what is missing — unanswered questions, absent evidence, and underdeveloped areas. The AI's ability to reason about absence is powerful here.

**Use Cases:**
- **Investigative Journalism** — Index thousands of leaked documents, map relationships between executives and shell companies, build timelines of suspicious transactions, test hypotheses.
- **Legal Case Preparation** — Paralegals do initial document review, associates build entity maps and timelines, lead attorney tests legal claims as hypotheses against evidence.
- **Medical Research** — Structure patient data, identify outcome patterns, map clinical courses, reveal similarities between presentations.
- **Historical Archival Investigation** — Build profiles of key figures, cross-reference private diaries with official communications, identify rhetorical shifts.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Purchase & Licensing

**Q: What do I get when I purchase?**
A: You receive a download link to a single HTML file. That file is the complete product. No installers, no accounts, no activation keys.

**Q: Can I use the tool on multiple computers?**
A: Yes. The file is yours. Copy it to as many devices as you want. There is no DRM or device limit.

**Q: What if I lose the file?**
A: You can re-download it from your purchase confirmation email. Or email yourself a copy as a backup — we recommend this.

**Q: Do you offer refunds?**
A: Contact us at contact@offline.ltd to discuss. We're reasonable people.

**Q: Is this a subscription?**
A: No. One payment. You own the file forever. We will never charge you again for the same product.

### Privacy & Security

**Q: Do you collect any data?**
A: No. We have no analytics, no telemetry, no tracking, no cookies (beyond what your browser does locally), and no way to see what you do with the tools. We literally cannot spy on you even if we wanted to.

**Q: Is my data safe?**
A: Your data lives in your browser's localStorage on your machine. It never leaves your computer unless you explicitly send it somewhere (like an AI API you configure yourself). Export your state regularly as backup.

**Q: What about the AI features?**
A: If you use Ollama (local AI), everything stays on your machine. If you use a cloud API (OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.), your queries are sent to their servers — but that's your choice and your API key. Offline.Ltd never sees any of it.

**Q: Can my employer see what I'm doing?**
A: The tools run locally in your browser. If your employer monitors your browser activity, they could theoretically see you using the tool. But no data is sent to Offline.Ltd or any third party (unless you configure a cloud AI API).

### Technical

**Q: Does the tool need internet to work?**
A: No. Every tool works fully offline after download. The only exception is if you choose to use a cloud AI API — that requires internet for the API calls only.

**Q: What happens when browsers update?**
A: HTML, CSS, and JavaScript are web standards that have been stable for decades. Your tool will continue to work. If a future browser breaks something, you can always use an older browser or a compatibility mode.

**Q: Can I edit the HTML file?**
A: Yes. It's a standard HTML file. You can open it in any text editor and modify it however you like. It's your file.

**Q: How do I update to a new version?**
A: Download the new version. Export your state from the old version as JSON. Import it into the new version. Your data carries forward.

**Q: My data disappeared! What happened?**
A: Data is stored in localStorage, which is tied to the file's location and your browser. If you moved the file, cleared browser data, or switched browsers, the localStorage context changes. Always export your state as JSON backup. You can import it to restore everything.

### Products

**Q: What's the difference between a Knife and an Engine?**
A: A Knife is a focused collection of 5-11 independent utilities for a specific field ($29). An Engine is a professional suite of 10 interconnected, workflow-specific tools where data flows between tools ($79).

**Q: What's the difference between a Knife and The General Research Lab?**
A: The Lab is a full research environment with 30+ integrated tools and RAG capabilities for working with document collections ($49). Knives are smaller, focused utility collections.

**Q: Do I need Ollama for all products?**
A: No. Only The General Research Lab and some Engine features use AI. The Knives work entirely without AI — they're pure utility tools.

**Q: What's included in The Full Pack?**
A: Every product we make now and every product we will ever make. One payment, lifetime access to the entire catalogue including future releases.
